The Baskin School of Engineering held their first in-person Fall Orientation on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, hosting 1,300 newly admitted first-year and transfer students. Led and organized by the Baskin Engineering undergraduate advising team, the orientation played a key role in welcoming new students to the engineering school, providing essential resources, and supporting students in their transition to campus.
Baskin Engineering welcomed its most diverse undergrad class yet, with students coming from a range of communities that have been historically underserved in STEM. The cohort of 1,558 new engineers represents 21 different countries.
The event was held in the Baskin Engineering courtyard where students could meet with their advisors, engage with faculty from their declared degree programs, explore ways to build community and get involved, and learn what to expect in their first year at UC Santa Cruz.
Andi Peters, Director of Undergraduate Advising said of the event: “Our vision was for students to engage with faculty, advising, and each other with the goal of them making a connection to their new home here at Baskin Engineering.” The shift to an in-person orientation further solidifies Baskin Engineering’s commitment to student success and retention.
When asked what they were most excited about for the upcoming school year, many students mentioned joining a BE club, or exploring Slugworks, an experiential learning creatorspace in Jack Baskin Engineering Building that gives UCSC students access to a range of machines and tools. Other students mentioned they were eager to get involved with research and make new friends.
