Continuing leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in engineering

Across the country, many states have begun to restrict the ability of their colleges and universities to mount programming meant to support access, inclusion, and diversity efforts. We can expect this trend to continue. The leadership provided by Baskin Engineering and UC Santa Cruz will be crucial in supporting institutions that struggle under these restrictions to find ways to ensure that historically excluded students, staff, and faculty can thrive and meet their potential as contributors to the growing engineering community of researchers, educators, and practitioners.

Baskin Engineering was selected as the Western Regional Hub of the NSF INCLUDES Engineering Plus Alliance under the leadership of Marcella Gomez, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Baskin Engineering has also represented UCSC in the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Action Collaborative on Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech, an effort led by Sri Kurniawan, Associate Dean for Research, and my Executive Advisor, Abigail Kaun. Baskin Engineering faculty and staff have collaborated to garner a $1M grant from the NSF for Contributor Catalyst, a program hosted by our Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS), to bring Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students to campus to learn about open source programming.

Baskin Engineering’s efforts are supported by strong leadership at the campus level, starting with Chancellor Cindy Larive, who chairs the Alliance of Hispanic Serving Research Universities (HSRU), the dedication and excellence of our HSI Initiatives office, and many other individuals and programs across the university.
