Annual senior design showcase underscores student innovation, experiential learning, and positive impact of academia-industry collaboration

The UC Santa Cruz Baskin School of Engineering recently hosted the 2023 Senior Design Showcase and Partners’ Day, an annual event that highlights the senior capstone team projects in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and robotics engineering.

Among those 34 projects presented to 230 guests were eight capstones by students participating in the Baskin Engineering Corporate Sponsored Senior Projects Program (CSSPP).

Partners' Day 2023 presentations

The CSSPP is a two-quarter, intensive program pairing student teams with industry sponsors to address technical issues or add new features to the sponsoring company’s products or services. CSSPP provides students a hands-on opportunity to tackle real-world engineering challenges, gaining valuable industry experience and skills.

The 2022–23 corporate sponsors were Arrcus, ChargePoint, Digital Dynamics, Universal Audio, Retyrn Corporation, and Keysight Technologies. This was the second year in a row Digital Dynamics and Universal Audio partnered with the CSSPP and the third year for Keysight.

This year’s Keysight student team focused on expanding the functionality of Keysight’s OpenTap testing framework and incorporating the use of collective robots (cobots) to improve cellular connectivity testing processes.

“The UCSC cobot project is a tribute to the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and discipline of the UCSC students involved and to the commitment by their advising faculty,” noted Keysight in their June 7 blog article.

From software testing and computer programming to web application development, the 2022–23 CSSPP projects encouraged students to tap into a wide range of engineering skills, ideas, and tools.

“This event marked the 12th year of the Corporate Sponsored Senior Projects Program. The CSSPP enriches our capstone culture at the Baskin School of Engineering and strengthens our partnerships with many leading Silicon Valley high-tech companies,” said Patrick Mantey, emeritus professor of electrical and computer engineering.
