To meet the rising numbers of students seeking engineering degrees, the Baskin School of Engineering is adding tenured, tenure-track, and teaching professor positions in disciplines such as machine learning, human computer interaction, storage systems and databases, experiential learning, and sustainable power engineering.
Nestled among the redwood trees on the beautiful California Central Coast, the school of engineering offers world-class engineering education and research. Baskin Engineering’s faculty members, many of whom have strong partnerships in industry in Silicon Valley and here in Santa Cruz, are conducting cutting-edge research in the fields of computational media, genomics, health engineering, cyber-physical systems, open source software, robotics, data science, and machine learning and artificial intelligence, among others.
“Our faculty bring world-class expertise to their classrooms and research labs,” said Alexander Wolf, dean of the Baskin School of Engineering. “They are trailblazers in their fields—developing innovative technologies and contributing to ground-breaking discoveries—and inclusive educators, dedicated to preparing the next generation of socially responsible engineers.”
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Baskin Engineering is a relatively young school garnering increasing national recognition. Recent Baskin Engineering and UC Santa Cruz rankings include:
- #5 for Best Undergraduate Computer Science Specialty: Game Development Program
- U.S. News and World Report, 2023
- #5 for Best Computer Game Design Master’s Program
- Animation Career Review, 2022
- #46 for Best Undergraduate Computer Science Program
- U.S. News and World Report, 2023
- #2 for Best Public Universities For Making An Impact
- Princeton Review, 2022
- #35 for Top Public Universities
- U.S. News & World Report, 2023
Although Baskin Engineering is growing quickly—30% of the UCSC fall 2022 class are engineering majors—maintaining a strong sense of community and furthering belonging and inclusion remains top priority for the school.
“The most exciting thing about being a part of Baskin Engineering is working with a group of outstanding scholars, who are also friendly and supportive,” said Chen Qian, professor of computer science and engineering. “I have received advice and support from senior colleagues, and now as a full professor, I am ready to help others in Baskin.”
This fall, Baskin welcomed 11 new faculty members, bringing the total faculty count to 130. Since 2016, the school has increased the number of faculty by half and doubled the amount of engineering research funding received, bringing in a total of $265M in the 2021–22 academic year. As Baskin Engineering reflects on the achievements and contributions during this 25th anniversary year, the school is looking forward to new programs and initiatives that will fuel the next 25 years of research innovation and teaching excellence.
